Disney gives Epic Games $1.5 billion to create a Fortnite-based “persistent universe.”

Customers will be able to play, watch, create, and purchase digital and physical products associated with Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and other brands thanks to the partnership. Disney is preparing to launch a new gaming and entertainment empire by strategically investing $1.5 billion in Epic Games, the company behind the well-known video game Fortnite.

The relationship encompasses a wider effort to create a gaming and entertainment realm that merges Disney’s superior storytelling with Epic Games’ viral hit, Fortnite. Customers will be able to play, watch, create, and purchase digital and physical products associated with Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other properties thanks to this partnership.

With the immensely popular Fortnite, gamers and fans will be able to experience Disney’s cherished brands and franchises in unprecedented ways within the new universe, which will be a vast and open gaming and entertainment area. The new project is entirely original and will be developed by Epic Games, not anything that developed from previous collaborations. The companies want to build a virtual environment that is similar to the metaverse, where users can interact with various immersive experiences.

Disney was among the first firms to see the possibility of fusing their worlds with ours in Fortnite, and they leverage Unreal Engine throughout their portfolio, according to Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic. In order to create a long-lasting, transparent, and interoperable ecosystem that will unite the Fortnite and Disney communities, we are currently working together on something completely new.

Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro highlighted his delight about the agreement, saying that Fortnite’s open environment and Epic Games’ industry-leading technology would let Disney reach consumers where they are and enable them to interact with Disney in the most relevant manner.

This partnership represents Disney’s largest ever foray into the video gaming industry and will present ample opportunity for growth and expansion. Players’ creativity will be unleashed by the new immersive universe, which will let them make their own stories and experiences, show off their fandom in a very Disney way, and share content with one another in ways they adore. Unreal Engine, a cutting-edge technology, will power the new universe and allow gamers to fully immerse themselves in the Disney world like never before.

Customers will have a plethora of options to play, watch, shop, and interact with characters and storylines from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other properties in the new persistent universe. Although the universe will work with Fortnite, Disney Fortnite will not be available as a standalone game. Instead, it resembles a Disney world that is connected to the independent Fortnite.

The transition to these metaverse-like experiences is noteworthy because Disney once had a metaverse division that was shut down and its fifty employees were laid off. That March 2023 action was cited by observers as proof that the metaverse was losing popularity. That turns out to have been something of a ruse, as Disney still seems intent on uniting all of its products into a sort of metaverse.

Thanks to Disney and Epic Games’ collaboration, fans will be able to relive their favorite Disney tales and worlds in innovative ways. Through the integration of Disney’s exceptional storytelling into Epic Games’ popular game Fortnite, the partnership will create a whole new gaming and entertainment universe with enormous growth and development potential.
