In an unprecedented move, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the longest-running armed group in Manipur’s valley, and the governments of India and Manipur inked a peace agreement in New Delhi.
The accord is expected to provide impetus for the commencement of a new phase of peace in the North East, specifically in Manipur.
It is a historic accomplishment, according to Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, to realize Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s goal of inclusive development and give Northeast Indian adolescents a better future.
The Home Minister extends a warm welcome to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and wishes them well on their path toward peace and advancement.
Since 2014, the Indian government has made deals with various armed groups in the Northeast region in an effort to put an end to militancy and advance development. These agreements have been facilitated by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, as well as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision.
For the first time, an armed Manipuri group from the valley has decided to reintegrate into society by renunciating violence and upholding the Indian Constitution and local laws.
The accord would not only put an end to the fighting between the UNLF and security forces, which has cost countless lives on both sides for the past 50 years, but it will also present a chance to address the community’s long-standing grievances.
When UNLF rejoins mainstream society, other armed organizations in the valley will eventually be encouraged to take part in the peace process as well.
Today in New Delhi, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the oldest armed group in Manipur’s valley, inked a peace agreement with the governments of India and Manipur, marking a historic development.
Since its founding in 1964, the UNLF has conducted operations both inside and outside the Indian Territory. With this deal, a new age of peace in the North East in general and Manipur in particular is about to be ushered in.

The Home Minister greeted the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces (UNLF) to the democratic processes and wished them well on their path toward peace and advancement.
Since 2014, the Government of India has signed agreements with various armed groups in the North East region in order to eliminate militancy and promote development. These agreements have been made in accordance with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision and under the direction of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah.
As part of the government of India’s conflict resolution initiatives, political settlements have been reached with a number of ethnic armed groups in the Northeast, but this is the first time an armed group from the Manipuri valley has agreed to return to mainstream society by renunciating violence and upholding the laws of the land and the Indian Constitution.
In addition to ending the hostilities between the UNLF and security forces, which have cost countless lives on both sides for the past 50 years, the accord will allow the community a chance to address long-standing issues.
It is hoped that with UNLF back in the mainstream, other armed groups in the valley may eventually feel inspired to join the peace process as well. The establishment of a Peace Monitoring Committee (PMC) will supervise the observance of the established ground rules. This development is probably going to be a big step toward the State’s return to peace and normalcy.
Senior members of the United National Liberation Front and the Manipur government, as well as the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, signed the agreement in New Delhi.
