Recently, Indian-born engineer Akash Bobba gained notoriety after being selected as one of six young engineers employed by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). According to reports, the six engineers—all between the ages of 19 and 24—have been given exceptional access to private government networks, which has caused a great deal of controversy and worry.
Bobba reports directly to Amanda Scales, the recently hired chief of staff, and is identified in internal government documents as a “expert” at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Scales, who has experience hiring for Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI, has fueled rumors about Bobba’s quick rise.
It is quite amazing how Bobba rose from his early days as a brilliant coder at UC Berkeley to a high-ranking government official.

AKASH BOBBA: WHO IS HE?
Bobba had a remarkable academic career, as evidenced by his now-deleted LinkedIn profile. He completed internships at prominent software firms including Meta, Palantir, and the well-known hedge fund Bridgewater Associates while enrolled at UC Berkeley’s esteemed Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology department.
Bobba’s résumé highlights his proficiency in financial modeling, data analytics, and artificial intelligence in addition to his technical abilities.
Charis Zhang, a former classmate of Bobba’s, recounted an event at Berkeley that perfectly captures his genius for coding. Zhang described how Bobba’s buddy unintentionally erased their entire coding two days prior to a crucial project deadline. Bobba stayed composed, completely reworked the project from start over night, and turned it in ahead of schedule, earning top grades, while the rest of the team panicked.
“I unintentionally erased our whole codebase while working on a project at Berkeley. I went into a panic. In a single night, Akash simply gazed at the screen, shrugged, and rebuilt everything from the beginning—better than before. Zhang said on social media, “We turned in our work ahead of schedule and won first place in the class.
In addition to Bobba, the other engineers hired by DOGE include Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran.
