India’s steadfast determination to eradicate drugs led to the disposal of more than 1.4 lakh kg of drugs, valued at Rs 2,000 crore, underscoring the country’s zero-tolerance policy for narcotics.
Over 1.4 lakh kilogrammes of drugs worth over Rs 2,000 crore that were confiscated by various law enforcement and anti-drug organisations will be destroyed in India.
India is fighting drug misuse and trafficking aggressively. Today, a regional conference on “Drugs Smuggling and National Security,” organised by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will bring together law enforcement and anti-drug organisations in New Delhi.
The destruction of 1,44,000 kg of drugs worth Rs 2,416 crore would be supervised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in coordination with Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTF) in every state and will take place in various sites across the country.
The NCB units in Hyderabad, Indore, and Jammu collectively captured 6,590 kg, 822 kg, and 356 kg of the drugs that are scheduled for destruction. A total of 1,44,122 kg of drugs will also be disposed of by law enforcement agencies across various states, including 1,486 kg in Assam, 229 kg in Chandigarh, 25 kg in Goa, 4,277 kg in Gujarat, 2,458 kg in Haryana, 4,069 kg in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,03,884 kg in Madhya Pradesh, 159 kg in Maharashtra, 1,803 kg in Tripura, and 4,049 kg in Uttar Pradesh.
To create a drug-free India, the Central government has adopted a “zero tolerance” policy. Surprisingly, between June 1, 2022, and July 15, 2023, all state ANTFs and regional NCB units destroyed a total of 8,76,554 kg of pharmaceuticals, with an estimated market value of Rs 9,580 crore. This figure is more than 11 times the initial target.
At the conclusion of this operation, roughly 10 lakh kg of drugs with a total estimated worth of Rs 12,000 crore will have been destroyed.
This steadfast effort to rid the country of narcotics is evidence of India’s dedication to the welfare of its people and its goal to establish a secure and drug-free society. The elimination of these illegal substances sends a clear message to both drug traffickers and users that India is united in the fight against the drug epidemic, protecting its citizens, and maintaining national security.
