According to the vice chancellor, the stampede happened when it began to rain during vocalist Nikita Gandhi’s performance.
At the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) annual festival in Kerala on Saturday, there was a stampede-like event that resulted in four student deaths and over sixty injuries. The incident happened during one of vocalist Nikita Gandhi’s concerts.
Four kids—two girls and two boys—were declared dead at the scene, despite the fact that all of the injured pupils were sent to the closest Kalamassery Medical College for treatment.
An official from the community claims that the incident happened because of the same exit and the auditorium’s entrance. The source told news agency ANI, “Students who were entering the auditorium fell down the stairs and the crowd trampled them.”
According to the university’s vice chancellor, the stampede happened as soon as it started to rain. “The festival opened yesterday. A variety of programs have been planned for the festival. There was music scheduled for today. There were also students from nearby colleges present during the event. Regretfully, there was a large throng. There was a rush at the stairs and more than 2,000 individuals entered, he claimed.
Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, expressed shock over the incident on Saturday night and ordered an investigation. “Our deepest sympathies are extended to the families of the four pupils who departed from this life. For the injured, improved and immediate treatment facilities have been set up. The Ministers of Industries, P. Rajeev, and Higher Education, R. Bindu, have left for Ernakulam to personally evaluate the situation. He said on X (formerly Twitter) that “a thorough investigation into the incident will commence without delay.”
Minister of Higher Education for Kerala, R. Bindu, announced that appropriate protocols and steps are being taken to prevent similar events in the future. This is the first horrible event that has happened. Thus, we will now investigate the causes and work to prevent similar events in the future,” she stated.
