In protest of the death of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee woman doctor who was assassinated on Friday while carrying out her duties at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Hospital, doctors nationwide went on strike on Monday, August 12.
In the Kolkata doctor murder case, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) released a protest appeal calling for justice for the victim.
West Bengali medical personnel have announced an indefinite strike and stopped working in the interim. The physicians’ strike is expected to have a major impact on patient care.
Doctor Murder Case in Kolkata: Actual Events
On Friday morning, the body of a female doctor was discovered in the seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital, her injuries evident. On Thursday, August 8, at around 11:15 p.m., she made her last phone call to her mother while she was on night shift.
She had dinner with two younger doctors after finishing her nightly rounds assignment, and at around two in the morning, she walked to the seminar hall to spend the remainder of the night asleep. On Friday morning, when two more doctors arrived to check on her, they discovered her body partially covered. The officers reported the incident to the Tala officers Station after ruling out suicide.
“This is not a case of suicide; the woman was murdered following sexual assault,” a police officer was cited by PTI. Nevertheless, the victim, a postgraduate student in chest medicine, died in the seminar hall located on the fourth floor of the emergency facility without any CCTV cameras.
An unnamed hospital doctor said, “She went to the seminar room because there was no separate on-call room to rest.” In this Kolkata doctor murder case, the police questioned five people who were with her on Thursday night when they were working the night shift.
The female physician was found partially nude on a blue mattress, dressed in a white top and a pink kurti. The inquest report contains this information. There were many hair strands and blood all over the mattress.

A senior police official, cited by PTI, stated that a broken neck bone was also found in the female doctor. It seems that she was first strangled and then suffocated to death. “We are anticipating the complete autopsy report, which will help us identify the perpetrators,” he said. The policeman went on to say that the break-in took place between three and six o’clock.
Two women and the deceased’s mother watched the live autopsy, which was conducted to gain more insight into the murder of the doctor in Kolkata, according to PTI.
Sanjay Roy, a suspect in the case, has been identified and taken into custody by the Kolkata Police. Due to his volunteer job on the police welfare board, he is an outsider with easy access to several hospital departments. News18 claims that Roy was taken into custody when it was determined that his actions were extremely suspicious.
Based on reports, Roy was located when investigators found a Bluetooth headset at the crime scene in the Kolkata doctor murder case. Following that, police looked through the CCTV footage that showed him at the scene of the incident.
During questioning by the police, Sanjay became emotional and acknowledged committing the crime. Additionally, police claimed that during Sanjay’s initial interrogation in the Kolkata doctor murder case, he gave inconsistent responses.

With the help of interns, house staff, and postgraduate trainees, junior doctors from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, National Medical College and Hospital, and Medical College held processions and sit-ins in protest. Similar protests were held in other state districts as well.
West Bengal’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, announced that her government will seek the death penalty for the accused and asked that the court examine the doctor murder case in Kolkata more quickly.
In the middle of the growing public outcry over the tragedy, Chief Minister Mamata stated that she has no issue with central agencies opening an investigation if the family demands one.
Leading law enforcement officers at her side, CM Mamata conferred with the victim’s relatives before to addressing the press and declaring, “This is a very distressing event.”
He further continued, “Everyone connected to the case ought to face immediate consequences. In order to facilitate a speedy legal process, we would like this matter to be expedited. I find it shocking that this occurrence happened in spite of hospital security and nurses present. The victim’s parents have also suggested that there may be an insider involved, which is what I’ve told the police. The Principal, MSVP, HOD, and ASP have all been dismissed from this hospital.”
She went on, giving specifics about the ongoing investigation, saying, “We have deployed the dog squad, video department, and forensic department to investigate the Kolkata doctor murder case.” “If Kolkata Police are unable to resolve this by Sunday, we will turn the matter over to the CBI.”
