Bindyarani Devi, a Commonwealth Games winner in weightlifting, won bronze in the women’s 55kg category at the IWF World Cup on Tuesday.

Competing in a non-Olympic weight class, the 25-year-old lifted 196kg (83kg+113kg) to finish last on the podium.

The Manipuri lifter, Bindyarani Devi , who won the CWG silver medal in Birmingham with a total effort of 203kg in 2022, delivered an uninspiring performance.

The Indian only managed three legal lifts in her six attempts here, and her total was 38kg lower than that of North Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong, who won the gold medal with a 234kg effort (103kg+131kg).

Cambei Mihaela-Valentina of Romania, who qualified for the Paris Olympics in Mirabai Chanu’s 49kg weight class, won silver with a personal best performance of 201kg (91kg + 110kg).

Bindyarani also won a silver medal in the clean and jerk category for her 113kg lift. Medals are awarded separately for snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift at continental, World Cup, and World Championship competitions.

Despite earning a medal at the final Olympic qualifying event, Bindiyarani is out of the running for the Paris Games.

Bindyarani Devi had advanced to the 59kg weight class, which is featured in the Paris Olympics, and competed in the 2022 world championships, finishing 25th. However, she returned to her previous weight division of 55kg, where she won silver at the Asian Championships last year.

Bindyarani Devi is now placed 29th in the 59kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) and is out of contention because only the top ten lifters in each weight class will qualify for the Paris Games.
