Rejecting Canada’s charges of Indian meddling in its elections as “unfounded,” New Delhi declared on Thursday, February 8, that interfering with other countries’ democratic processes is not part of its strategy.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal took aim at Ottawa during a news briefing, stating that “in fact, it is Canada that has been interfering in our internal affairs.”
“Reports have surfaced regarding a Canadian committee looking into foreign meddling… We vehemently deny such baseless accusations of Indian meddling in Canadian elections. He said, “Canada has been meddling in our domestic matters; it is not the objective of the Government of India to meddle in the democratic processes of other countries. Jaiswal went on to say, “We have consistently raised this issue with them, and we urge Canada to take effective measures to address our core concerns.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed an independent panel in September of last year to look into claims of foreign meddling in Canadian affairs.
It has asked for information about potential Indian election meddling to be shared with the Canadian authorities.
India has been flagged as a potential source of foreign meddling by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, which has accused China of trying to subtly influence its last two federal elections.
