Delhi:Due to the fact that two-wheeled vehicle are privately registered and infringe on specific motor Acts, the new notice effectively outlaws their use for services like Ola and Uber.
Initally, Bengaluru & Maharashtra now Delhi has joined the movement to outlaw ride-sharing services.
The Transport Department of the government of National Capital Region of Delhi said that it would outlaw the bike services offered by apps like Ola, Uber and Rapido in a public notice dated February 20, 2023 to take effect immediately.
Only Motorcyclist will be subject to this prohibition: cars and cab services are exempt.
Delhi Government: Reason for Ban
It has come to our attention that two-wheeler with a Non-Transport (private) registration mark or number are being utilised to transport people for hire or reward, which is a wholly commercial endeavor and against the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988.

Simply put, the majority of motorcycles you would typically find using Ola, Rapido, and other services have private number plates (unlike the yellow taxi number plates that are normally assigned to vehicles registered by the government). The Transport Ministry has determined that the existing bikes are illegal since they are not registered and hence violate the rules of the aforementioned 1988 Act.
Penalty for no compliance
- If caught, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be charged
- If the offence is commited again, then fine of Rs 10,000 will be charged as well as impriosnment.
- if the offence is repeated, the driving license of the driver can also get suspended for am minimum period of 3 months.
