A significant development in the Dubai Waste-to-Energy (DWE) project is announced by BESIX and Hitachi Zosen Innova (HZI) with the successful ignition of the first fire at the DWE facility.

This accomplishment shows how garbage ca be processed effectively and safely to produce renewable energy, and it is an important step towards finishing and operating the facility.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rahid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai executive Council, had the distinction of staying at the DWE site and was present for this crucial event.

The visit highlight the significance of the project and demonstrates Dubai’s dedication to sustainability, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence.

The DWE project benefits greatly from BESIX’s significant experience and competence in major infrastructure projects.

They are in charge of managing ancillary auxiliary, civil, and infrastructure works.

While this is going on HZI, is in charge of the process-related work, utilising their cutting-edge technology and knowledge to effectively and safely transform municipal sold waste into clean energy.

The DWE project, the biggest and most effective waste-to-energy facility to the world, intends to lessen Dubai’s reliance on landfills and assist Dubai in reaching its target of 75% waste diversion by 2025.

The DWE facility, which is now in the commissioning phase, processes 1,000 tonnes of garbage everyday.

This August, two lines will start producing energy. In Q1 2024, the projects intends to be completely operational across all five lines.

When operating at full capacity, the plant will process 5,666 tonnes of garbage per day, or 2 million tonnes yearly.

This will produce 220 MW of electricity, which will be enough to power about 135,00 houses in the area. Metals will be collected and repurposed for commercial use from the residual ash created during combustion.

The building of the facility complies with the highest requirements for engineering, effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

After completion, a joint venture between HZI and BESIX will work with Dubai Municipality to offer operation and maintenance services for 35 years.
