On Sunday, residents of Alabama awoke with the freedom to carry a pistol without a permit.
It was a significant development brought about by a state law approved last year that allowed people tp carry guns on 50 states in the United States without first obtaining a permit
Only two states- Vermont and Alaska – permitted residents to carry guns without restriction thirteen years ago, citing the second Amendment as general licence for everyone
However, since 2010, nearly two dozen states have adopted similar legislation, with 11 of them doing so just in the past three years.
Although supporters of gun rights have raised this action as a victory for the average law-abiding citizen, its detractors, including law enforcement and gun control groups, claim it will result in an uptick in gun crime and an increase in gun fatalities
Alabama joins ever-expanding guns club
Alabama joined the long list of 26 states that authorise residents to carry concealed pistols without permits on January 1, 2023.
After performing a background check to weed out applicants with criminal records and requiring some amount of training, states typically give concealed carry permits to its citizenry.
Although it is legal for someone to carry a concealed gun in public, they still have the option of applying for a permit.
Before being adopted this year in Alabama, the proposition was repeatedly introduced with little luck.
Georgia, Indiana, and Ohio approved legislation to that effect in 2022, while 2021 saw the introduction of similar laws in Arkansas, Iowa, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.
