Following the accused’s admission of guilt, a case was brought under the Aircraft Act and section 336 of the IPC. According to officials reported by news agency PTI, a 42-year-old passenger on an IndiGo aircraft was arrested by Mumbai Police on Tuesday for smoking a beedi (cigarette) on board.

The event happened on a journey from Delhi to Mumbai, where the passenger is said to have smoked a beedi in the aircraft’s lavatory. As soon as the IndiGo flight crew intervened, the passenger was turned over to the police upon landing in Mumbai.

The crew conducted a comprehensive check after becoming suspicious of the strong aroma of the beedi, which proved that a passenger was in fact smoking. Following the accused’s admission of guilt, a case was brought under the Aircraft Act and section 336 of the IPC. The police claim that the person is presently in judicial custody.

There have been previous incidents of passengers being detained for smoking on board. A similar incident occurred in August of last year when a male passenger on an IndiGo flight from Dubai to Mumbai was discovered smoking in the lavatory. After the crew contacted the Sahara police station in Mumbai, a case was filed under Section 25 of the Aircraft Rules and Section 336 of the IPC.
