Indian nationals can now visit Iran without a visa. Every six months, they are allowed entry without a visa for a maximum of 15 days.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy in New Delhi declared on Tuesday that Indian nationals are no longer need to obtain a visa in order to visit Iran. Every six months, Indian passport holders are granted entry into Iran for a non-extendable 15-day stay without the need for a visa.

The Embassy announced that, with permission from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government, Indian citizens would no longer need a visa as of February 4, 2024, if they meet the following requirements:

  • Every six months, holders of regular passports will be permitted entry into the nation without a visa for a stay of no more than fifteen days. The fact that the 15-day window cannot be extended is significant.
  • The waiver of visa requirements is limited to those intending to enter the Islamic Republic of Iran.
  • Indian nationals must get the required visas through the appropriate Islamic Republic of Iran representations in India if they want to remain longer, make more than one entry within a six-month period, or need a different kind of visa.
  • The approval’s description of the removal of visas particularly relates to Indian nationals who enter the nation through the air border.

The development demonstrates how strong India-Iran relations have remained despite several changes to the geopolitical landscape. Iran used to be India’s main supply of oil, but after former US President Donald Trump reinstated harsh sanctions against the Islamic country, things changed.

When India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in November of last year in Tehran, they talked about a number of topics, including the crucial Chabahar port and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

“Discussed bilateral issues, connectivity initiatives, the port of Chabahar, and a common understanding of the region’s present problems. The MEA statement stated that both parties have decided to further enhance their current cooperation in a number of areas.
