Maharashtra’s public universities have committed to offering free education to transgender students enrolled in various programs in compliance with a state government regulation. This happened when Maharashtra’s Minister of Higher and Technical Education declared that transgender students will receive free education at the state’s expense in an effort to promote inclusivity and diversity in the community’s access to higher education.
In compliance with these directives, students who identify as transgender shall receive free education from all Maharashtra state universities and the institutions that are connected with them. Minister Chandrakant Patil made the announcement on Tuesday, December 5 during a meeting with the vice-chancellors of Maharashtra’s state institutions.
The minister advised state universities to use the appropriate money made available to them to cover the educational expenses of transgender students at the conference. According to the news release, “all vice-chancellors unanimously accepted the minister’s appeal (to provide free education to the students of the transgender community)”.
The goal of the initiative is to improve equity for transgender students attending higher education institutions. The transgender people is anticipated to find their proper place as one among equals in a more inclusive society through education empowerment. It’s an attempt to bring a segment of society that has been marginalized into the mainstream and to support their pursuit of higher education.
