After the board of ChatGPT announced on Friday that it had sacked CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, Mira Murati has taken over as OpenAI’s acting CEO.
Murati is exceptionally competent for the position, according to a statement from the firm, which also stated that it “anticipates a seamless transition while it conducts a formal search for a permanent CEO.”
OpenAI announced on Friday that it “no longer has confidence” in Altman’s capacity to lead the organization going forward and that the board has conducted a thorough evaluation process prior to Altman’s departure.
“We appreciate all that Sam has done to help OpenAI from its inception to its current state. However, we think that as we proceed, new leadership will be required. Being in charge of the company’s safety, product, and research departments, Mira is highly equipped to take on the position of acting CEO. “We are extremely confident in her ability to guide OpenAI through this transitional phase,” a statement from OpenAI read.
Recently, Mira Murati, 34, was promoted to OpenAI’s interim CEO role. According to a New York Times story, Murati, an Albanian native born in 1988, is a mechanical engineer by profession who developed a hybrid race car as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College. Murati began her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs before switching to Zodiac Aerospace.

After working for Tesla for a while, where she was instrumental in the creation of the Model X vehicle, she joined OpenAI in 2018. She was also employed by Leap Motion, a start-up company that created a computer system for tracking finger and hand movements. OpenAI promoted her to the role of CTO last year.
“A member of OpenAI’s leadership team for five years, Mira has played a critical role in OpenAI’s evolution into a global AI leader,” reads the description provided by OpenAI. According to the statement, she already oversees the company’s product, safety, and research departments and offers a special set of skills and knowledge of its business, operations, and principles.
In a note to staff that news agency Bloomberg examined, Murati expressed her gratitude for being given the opportunity to manage the company, calling it a “honored and humbled” experience.
“Developers are actively building on our platforms, policymakers are considering the best ways to regulate these systems, and we are at a critical juncture where our tools are being widely adopted,” Murati stated in the memo.
According to her, this is a positive step forward and a chance to be involved in the development of AI that is applied to beneficial ends.
Meanwhile, Murati informed OpenAI staff members at a Friday company-wide meeting that Microsoft’s CEO and CTO, Satya Nadella and Kevin Scott, who are among OpenAI’s greatest supporters, have “utmost confidence” in the company’s trajectory, according to a story from The Information.
She restated that OpenAI was in the process of hiring a new CEO. Founded in 2015, OpenAI is a firm focused on AI research and deployment.
OpenAI was initially established as a non-profit organization, but in 2019 it underwent a restructuring that kept the nonprofit’s goals, governance, and oversight intact while enabling the business to raise funds to further its objectives.
