The National Film Awards have come a long way since they were first presented for films released in 1953.

The number of awards has increased over time. For the first six years, it was standard practice to present the Regional Best Award to the National Best Film itself.

Originally known as “State Awards,” they included two President’s Gold Medals, two certificates of merit, and silver medals for twelve regional films. The number of awards rose with time.

Nargis Dutt and Uttam Kumar were the first actors and actresses to win the Best Actress (then named Urvashi) and Best Actor (formerly called Bharat) Awards, which were established in 1968 for the movies of 1967.

The “Best Writing on Cinema” section focuses on promoting the study and appreciation of cinema as an art form and the dissemination of information and critical appreciation of the art form through the publication of various books, articles, reviews, newspaper coverage, and studies.
