With the live World Cup matches, Disney+ Hotstar is breaking records every day, making the ICC World Cup 2023 a big success.
They made the wise decision to provide mobile app users free World Cup streaming before to the tournament, which has proven to be a lucky charm for the platform.
Disney+ Hotstar breaks a new all-time highest concurrent viewership record with 4.4 crore people watching the India versus South Africa match when Virat Kohli completed his 49th ODI ton.
With this, Disney+ Hotstar has shattered its all-time concurrent digital viewership record three times inside a month.
When it recorded 3.5 crore concurrent viewers during the India vs. Pakistan match on October 14, it initially smashed the record. Then, during India vs. New Zealand, it broke the record with 4.3 crore viewers, and on Sunday, it did it for the third time with 4.4 crore concurrent viewers.
The Virat Kohli effect may have contributed to Disney+ Hotstar’s record concurrent viewership on Sunday, as the platform saw its biggest viewership during the latter portion of Virat’s innings and during King Kohli’s historic 49th ODI cricket century.
The original version of the Walt Disney-backed Disney+ Hotstar, known as Hotstar by Star India, debuted in India on February 11, 2015, and was the home of all of the country’s highest-grossing TV series in addition to having the streaming rights to all major international events.
After having a successful and promising independent existence, it was purchased by Walt Disney in 2019 and given the moniker Disney+ Hotstar.
However, they are having a lot of difficulty maintaining their market share because Jio Cinema, their competition, owns the rights to several important sporting events and well-known English shows. As a result, their overall paid subscriber base has decreased from 6.1 crore to 4.1 crore in just six months.
Their last chance to win back viewers was to offer free streaming for the Asia Cup and the World Cup 2023. This strategy appears to be working wonders for the OTT platform, as they are breaking records for viewership virtually every two weeks.
However, one of the biggest questions in the following days will be how long the World Cup’s effects will endure on the OTT Platform.
