On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Women’s Reservation Bill, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, with a majority of the votes.

The law was manually voted on by MPs, and after the votes were counted, it received 454 votes in favor and 2 votes against it.

The measure needed a two-thirds majority to succeed and was introduced by Union law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday during the first session of the new Parliament.

A 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and legislatures is sought by the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023.

However, the quota won’t be in effect until 2029 since it needs to be put into place after the delineation of constituencies, which won’t happen until the subsequent census, which is most likely to take place after the general elections in 2024.

Prior to the first extraordinary session of Parliament, the Union Cabinet met and approved the women’s reservation law.

Earlier on Wednesday, Home Minister Amit Shah urged the opposition to support the women’s reservation bill and stated that any flaws could be fixed in the future.

Shah dismissed concerns that the bill’s implementation would be delayed, stating that the next administration would carry out the census and delimitation exercise right away following the elections and start the process of implementing reservations for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Shah said during the discussion of the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill that women’s reservations would be implemented after 2029.

He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had just expressed the vision of women-led development at the recent G20 Summit and claimed that the approval of the women’s reservation law would herald the beginning of a new era.

According to him, the Modi administration has been working to empower women ever since it took office.

Rahul Gandhi, a Congressman, added on Wednesday that the Women’s Reservation Bill was “incomplete” because it did not include a quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC).

“The moment the opposition raises the issue of caste census and Adani, the BJP tries to raise a new event so that the OBC community and the people of India look the other way. In my research for the speech, I took a look at the different institutions that define how our country moves forward. There are many– Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhan Sabham bureaucracy, the press. And I look with an eye to understand what is the participation of the OBC community in these institutions,” Rahul Gandhi said in Lok Sabha.
